
Let’s Talk About Gallium Iodide Lamps (And Why Your PCB Cure Rate Matters)
If you’re running a PCB line, you already know that UV curing is where things either click or fall apart. Most of us rely on gallium iodide lamps because they hit that sweet spot for triggering photoresists. But here’s the catch: these things are picky. If the spectral output drifts by just a few nanometers, your cure rate tanks. Suddenly, you’re staring at a pile of boards that failed quality checks. Not a great way to spend a Tuesday.
The Deal with the Hardware
We build these tubes to take a beating. PCB lines run hot and they run fast. By using a gallium iodide fill, we can push a concentrated UV blast that digs deeper into the resist layer than those old-school mercury lamps. It means you can crank up your line speed. But there’s a trade-off. These lamps gethot. Like, really hot. If your cooling fans aren’t up to the task, the quartz envelope is going to stress out and burn out way sooner than it should. Keep them cool, and they’ll keep working.
The “Cheap Lamp” Gamble
You’ll see plenty of generic UV lamps out there. They look the same on paper, but buying them is a bit of a roll of the dice. A lot of low-cost suppliers just copy designs they don’t actually own. That’s fine until you try to export your machinery or ship your boards overseas. Customs agents aren’t fans of patent infringement. One red flag and your shipment is seized or frozen at the border. We handle our own IP. We own the patents on our gas mixtures and how the electrodes are shaped. It means when you ship your gear globally, you don’t have to sweat the legal side of things. You just ship and move on.
Getting Them Running
We designed these as drop-in replacements. The footprint is tight, so you won’t be spending your weekend rewiring your entire rack just to get a new lamp in. One quick tip: check your ballast. You need a precision ballast to keep the output steady. If the voltage is off, the lamp will flicker. That might not seem like a big deal, but it ruins the consistency of the cure across the board. Double-check your power before you flip the switch.
